Dr. Subramanyeswara Rao Chalasani, true patriarch to his family and friends, passed away on September 20th, 2021 at age 81. Though he spent the majority of his life in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, his strong presence was felt across the ocean in his native India. His passions spanned both cultures. He spent Game Day watching his beloved Tigers and Saints. The rest of his week was devoted to his family and friends. His family, especially his grandchildren, filled his heart and days. Dr. Chalasani is the true embodiment of the American Dream. He immigrated to the U.S. and built a thriving family and psychiatric practice while giving a helping hand to those who aspired for the same so they too could achieve their dreams. His nieces and nephews from India enjoyed the generosity of his home and mentorship. His legacy will live on in each and every person who had the good fortune of knowing him. For all this and more, he is truly irreplaceable and will be eternally missed. Born in Bhatlapenumarru, Andhra Pradesh, Dr. Chalasani studied medicine at Rangaraya Medical College in Kakinada and trained in Psychiatry at UTMB Galveston. In his 5 decades of practice, he has been steadfastly dedicated to his patients, colleagues, staff and community. They have all repaid him with their loyalty, love and confidence. He is survived by his wife, Sivakumari Chalasani; his daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Renu Chalasani and Mr. Reuben Swartz & their children, Nathan & Neela, and his son and daughter- in-law, Dr.’s Ramu & Madhavi Chalasani and their children, Sai and Sheila. He is also survived by his sisters, Suseela Dasari, Devika Rani Gottipatti, and his brother Anil Chalasani. Public visitation will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2021 from 11am to 12pm at Rabenhorst Funeral Home Downtown, 825 Government St. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to MD Anderson through charitynagivator.org, in Dr. Rao Chalasani’s name.

Dr. Chalasani was not only a mentor, but more importantly, a friend. When I was a 19 year old student working on one of his inpatient psychiatric units, he took me under his wing and allowed me to attend team staffing. He spent time explaining mental health diagnosis and treatment options. Years later when I completed my training and became a licensed psychologist, I had the honor of serving as his consultant.

Dr. Chalasani was a psychiatrist of exceptional skill. His care for his patients was encompassing. As a mentor, he was gracious with his time and my career may not have turned out as it did had it not been for Dr. Chalasani. As a friend, he was always understanding and gave more than he ever requested.

Rest well Dr. Chalasani and know that I will be forever grateful.

As a patient of this great psychiatrist I am devastated. I am broken hearted. Today life demands of me to breathe while experiencing the news of the passing of Dr. Chalansani. It requires me to be thankful that he was my physician. Dr. Chalansani's knowledge helped me to live a more normal life. There is no way to repay this man for that. Me and my family are forever grateful for who Dr. Chalansani "is" and what he stood for.

To his family, from the images of you and he, he was even greater at home with you. My prayer is that you stay the course, and remember who you are. You are the family of Dr. R S Chalansani, a great intellectual, doctor, and wonderful human being. Surely you are too. Remember who you are.

We knew Dr Chalasani for the nearly three decades that we spent in Baton Rouge. He was a good friend, a wonderful man and community leader. We remember his bright smile, his faith in the goodness of people, and his willingness to share his time and resources with the community at large.

Dr. Chalasani was a reputed psychiatrist and a great human being. It was my privilege to have known him in a professional capacity while liaising with our students in mental health settings. I was touched by his thoughtfulness on several other occasions.

His sudden passing away is shocking. Our deepest sympathies to his family and friends. May the heavenly abode soul rest in eternal peace.
