It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Susan Haik Marino, 76. Susan passed away peacefully at her home in Baton Rouge, La. surrounded by loved ones on April 27, 2025. Born on December 8, 1948, to Saba and Edith Haik in Bogalusa, La., Susan had fond memories growing up with her older brother Tommy, younger sister Freda, and numerous friends and relatives. After graduating from Bogalusa High School, Susan moved to New Orleans to attend Meadows-Draughon Business College. She later moved to Baton Rouge where she met her husband, Anthony, on a blind date. When she learned they were born on the exact same day, month and year, she knew it was fate that brought them together. They were married on November 17, 1973, and later welcomed two daughters, Marisa and Christy. Susan worked full-time as an Administrative Specialist for the State of Louisiana while being a devoted wife and mother, later taking some night classes in Psychology and Sociology at LSU.
She retired from the State of Louisiana after 33 years of service. After years of volunteer work, Susan began working part-time at the Louisiana Association of Substance Abuse Counselors & Trainers (LASACT) from 2009 until 2024.
Susan was a kind, patient, and thoughtful person who made a profound impression on everyone she met. Her family was the most important thing in her life, and she always worked hard to make every special occasion extra special, making Easter baskets from the Easter Bunny and Christmas stockings from Santa every year for her family. She would always call her daughters and son-in-law on the morning of their birthday at their exact time of birth to sing happy birthday. She loved the color blue, traveling, funny movies, and every type of seafood.
Susan was a devout Catholic and member of St. Jean Vianney Catholic Church. She had a strong devotion to Divine Mercy, making her passing on the Feast of Divine Mercy Sunday special.
Susan leaves behind her beloved husband of 51 years, Anthony; daughters Marisa Marino Beard and Christy Marino; son-in-law Brooks Beard; sister Freda Quinn (Terry “Foots”); numerous nieces and nephews; her rescue dog Toby; three grand-dogs; and two grand-kitties. She is preceded in death by her parents, Saba and Edith Haik; brother, Thomas “Tommy” Haik; rescue dogs Tex, Bailey, and Cassie; and her first grand-dog, Henry.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the following for the extraordinary care they provided to Susan and her family: Dr. Leonard Alsfeld with Ochsner MD Anderson Cancer Center in New Orleans; Sobia Ozair, MD, Nakhle Saba, MD, Marshall Stagg, II, MD, Gerald Miletello, MD, Emily Ferrara, PA, Jasmine Spearman, NP, Sarah Ann Mangham, PA, and the many nurses and staff of Oncology 5 West at Our Lady of the Lake in Baton Rouge; Caregivers Angela Johnston and Lartika “Tee” Rowe with Home Instead; and Susan’s niece, Sally Marino Degreenia, with Hospice of Baton Rouge.
