
A resident of Alexandria, Susan died Saturday, June 19, 2010, at the home of her parents in Baton Rouge after a courageous battle with cancer over the past 10 years. Susan was born April 2, 1960, in Fort Eustis, Va., and resided in Baton Rouge, graduated from St. Joseph's Academy in 1978, attended Northwestern State University, and in 1980 married Thomas O. Wells, of Alexandria. Susan and Tom resided in Baton Rouge from 1980 to 1983 and worked together in obtaining Tom's graduation from law school. Since 1983, Susan resided in Alexandria and became a loving wife, mother, friend to all she met and caregiver to all. The Rev. Craig Scott will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Rita's Catholic Church, Alexandria, on Wednesday, June 23, at 11 a.m. Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Survived by her husband of 30 years, Thomas O. Wells; two daughters, Emily and spouse Hunter Moody, and Claire Wells; parents, D.R. and Jimmie Carol Atkinson, of Baton Rouge; mother-in-law, Margaret Jordan Wells, of Alexandria; brothers, Michael Atkinson, Danny and spouse Lisa Atkinson, and Paul and spouse Milagros Atkinson, all of Baton Rouge; sister, Nancy and spouse Michael Hendrick, of Baton Rouge; brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law, Chester D. Wells Jr. and spouse Carol, of Alexandria, Rebecca C. Wells and spouse Thomas Schworer, of Bainbridge Island, Wash., and Anna E. Wells, of Alexandria. Preceded in death by her grandparents, Frank and Marguerite Barfield Atkinson and James and Orlea Tregre; and father-in-law, Chester D. Wells Sr. Music at the memorial Mass will be prepared by her sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Michael Hendrick. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Tim Barfield, Kathy Elam, Megan Perez, Emma Williams and all of the staff of Amedisys Hospice Services for the loving care beyond description; the Rev. Gerard Young for spiritual direction and, especially, all of those friends who offered prayers and help to the family during this difficult time.
