

Thelma Burroughs Jones peacefully went home to be with the Lord on January 24, 2016, at Bayshore Medical Center in Pasadena, TX, following brief health complications from an aneurysm. She was 93 years old. Born on September 4, 1922, in Natchez, Mississippi, Thelma lived most of her life as a resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where she enjoyed hosting memorable Christmas Eves for her family, spinning tales of her heady days during WWII, working the local paper's daily crossword puzzles and playing lots of Boggle at the kitchen table. She spent the last five years of her life near family in Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband and love of her life, Osce R. Jones, Sr., of Baton Rouge, LA; son, Osce R. Jones, Jr., of Baton Rouge, LA; father, Dallas S. Burroughs, Sr., of Raleigh, NC; mother, Olive B. Burroughs of Natchez, MS; sister, Elsie B. Skubish of Durham, NC; two brothers, Dallas S. Burroughs, Jr., of Fuqua Varina, NC, and Lawrence W. Burroughs of Baton Rouge, LA; and grandson, John D. Lizana, Jr.. Thelma is survived by two daughters, Lynn J. Hendrix of Deer Park, TX, and Carol J. Lizana and husband, John, of Baton Rouge, LA; daughter in law, Linda Jones of Prairieville, LA; half-sister, Nancy B. Stout of Knightdale, NC; grandchildren, Wade Maclean and wife, Rachel, of Lumberton, TX; Dody Major and husband, Michael, of Denham Springs, LA; Mindy O'Bannon and husband, Tom, of Cypress, TX; Jan Denby and husband, Jason, of La Porte, TX; Morgan Major and husband, Tre, of Denham Springs, LA; Casey Hendrix and wife, Jeni, of Deer Park, TX; Lacey Tragesser and husband, Paul, of Prairieville, LA; Sally Mayo and husband, JJ, of Baton Rouge, LA; David Lizana and wife, Kristen, of Sorrento, LA; Lindsey Donaldson and husband, Brad, of Prairieville, LA and Leah Baughman and husband, Jamey, of Prairieville, LA.; and 25 great-grandchildren. Following her graduation from Baton Rouge High School in 1941, Thelma worked as a bookkeeper in the accounting department at Gulf States Utilities Company for six years. After WWII, she married Osce R. Jones, Sr., a distinguished airman then serving in the Air Force Reserves. They were married for 47 wonderful years full of love, travel and dancing. She was also an active, longtime member of Baton Rouge's First Baptist Church. A beautiful, loving and devoted mother, Thelma spread joy everywhere she went and was deeply cherished by her family. Affectionately called "Mimi" by her 11 grandchildren, she was known for her infectious laugh, witty sense of humor and a zest for life that always made her the belle of the ball. She also happened to make incredible peanut-butter-and-marshmallow-crème sandwiches. She will be greatly missed by those who held her dear and carry on her loving legacy. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 28, 2016, from 12 pm until Funeral Services at 2 pm at Greenoaks Funeral Home. Interment to follow on the grounds of Greenoaks Memorial Park.
