
She died peacefully Saturday, June 25, 2011, at her home in Baton Rouge after a prolonged illness. She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. Visitation at St. Joseph Cathedral, Fourth and Main streets, Baton Rouge, Thursday, June 30, from 9 a.m. until funeral Mass at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Jamin David, celebrant. Interment to follow in the Port Hudson National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be J. Michael Robinson, John M. Cooper, Eric Sandoz and Benjamin Cooper. She was born May 20, 1927, in Many, and reared in Shreveport. Mrs. Sandoz recently celebrated her 84th birthday. She and her husband, longtime LSU Professor G. Ellis Sandoz, also recently celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Sandoz graduated high school at St. Vincent's Academy as valedictorian and went on to Centenary College, earning a music degree in voice. As a lyric soprano, she did post-graduate work in music toward a professional operatic career in Europe, studying at the prestigious Heidelberg Conservatory in Germany. She had previously won acclaim in Shreveport performances of Puccini's "La Boheme" and "Madame Butterfly," Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro," and Richard Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier." Resident in Baton Rouge since 1978, music continually remained of central importance in her life. She often sang at weddings and social gatherings as well as by being active in the Baton Rouge Music Club and the Baton Rouge Music Club Auxiliary, serving as president of both; the LSU Friends of the School of Music board of directors, and also on the La. State Music Club executive committee; she also was active in the Baton Rouge Art League. She was a lifetime member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Baton Rouge Chapter. Other activities included Meals on Wheels and church-related charitable work. Preceded in death by her parents, Elizabeth DeLatin and Henry Watterson Hubley; sister, Marietta Hubley Gahr; and brothers, H. W. Hubley, Jr., Elbert Hubley and Daniel Hubley. Alverne is survived by her husband, George Ellis Sandoz Jr., and their four children, George Ellis Sandoz III, Austin, Texas, Lisa Claire Alverne Robinson, Houston, Erica Christine Cooper, Pensacola, Fla., and Jonathan David Sandoz, Roanoke, Va. Also survived by nine grandchildren, Eric Sandoz, Claire Robinson, Rachel Robinson, Genevieve Robinson, Benjamin Cooper, Stephen Cooper, Elizabeth Sandoz, Duncan Sandoz and Zachary Sandoz; brother, Malcolm Hubley, of Oklahoma City; and 17 nieces and nephews.
