Tommy was born on August 25, 1937 in New Orleans where she resided until 1951 when her family moved to Baton Rouge. She attended Baton Rouge High School where she was a beautiful, four-year honor student, active in numerous clubs. Tommy met Bill Humphreys in the ninth grade, dated through high school, and later married him in 1956. Bill had purchased a small sporting goods company and together they successfully grew and developed the company into a thriving, international fishing tackle business.
More than anything, Tommy was a devoted mother who loved spending time with family, especially her children and grandchildren. She was always available to assist with a project and was there to offer her valued wisdom, support and encouragement, no matter what challenges they faced.
She was a devout member of First United Methodist Church, holding many responsibilities in her Circle and PEO, a separate organization near and dear to her heart. She taught Sunday school for years and served on numerous church committees. Her talents, dedication and commitment led to her receiving the United Methodist Women’s Service award. She was intelligent and good natured, truly living a faith-based life focused on others.
Tommy is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, William “Bill” Humphreys, Sr., daughter Holly Humphreys Hutchison (Hutch), son William “Bill” Humphreys, Jr. (Sheryl Blanchard), daughters, Tommie Humphreys Maranto (John), and Susan Humphreys Hightower (Jerry); grandchildren, Stephen Edward Miclette, Jr.(fiancée, Erin Farrell), Emily Hightower McCollam (Alex), Lauren Maranto White (Chandler), Casey Hightower Upton (Brad), John Coyt Hutchison, Jr. (Michelle), and Katherine Hutchison Cagle; four great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her brother, T.N. Retif. Tommy is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Alfred Retif, Sr. and Tommie Hutchinson Retif and brother, Alfred Joseph Retif, Jr.
