"Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, Let me stand, I am tired, I am weak, I am worn; thru the storm, thru the night, Lead me on to the light, Take my hand, Precious Lord, Lead me home. When my ways grow dear, Precious Lord, linger near. When my life is Almost gone, Hear my cry, hear my call, Hold my hand lest I fall, Take my hand Precious Lord, Lead me home. When the darkness appears and the night draws near, And the day is past And gone, at the river I stand, Guide my Feet, hold my hand, Take my hand, Precious Lord, Lead me home." Val Ann Fugler was born on Sept. 1, 1940, in Decatur, Ala., to Ernest Papenburg and Margaret Sarver Papenburg. Ann was called home by her Lord and Savior to join her son and parents at 3:02 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge surrounded by her loving family. Ann was a loving mother, wife, grandmother and sister. She was a 1958 graduate of Istrouma High School and a member of the last three-year class of Our Lady of the Lake School of Nursing, graduating in 1961. After passing the registered nurse examination and getting married in 1961, she embarked on a seven-year nursing career. After the birth of her second child, she retired to devote her full time to her husband, children and later her grandchildren, being a blessing to all. Ann was a member of Community Bible Church for 40 years. Until being slowed by the effects of diabetes and a heart bypass, she was active in the lives of her family and friends and was a regular attendee of Community Bible Church. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., Sunday, Oct. 4, was from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visitation resumes at the funeral home on Monday, Oct. 5, from 8:30 a.m. until services at 10 a.m. conducted by the Rev. Cleve Chandler. Interment at Greenoaks Memorial Park. Ann is survived by her devoted husband of 48 years, Allen Fugler Sr.; son, Allen Fugler Jr. and fiancée Danielle Smith, of Orlando, Fla.; daughter, Dawn McDonner and husband John, of Baton Rouge; brother, Charles Papenburg and wife Shelia, of Baton Rouge; sister, Sue Cashio and husband John, of Baton Rouge; and the apples of her eye, her grandchildren, Blake and Lanette Fugler and Amber McDonner. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Margaret Papenburg; son, Todd Fugler; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles and Etta Fugler; and brother-in-law, Dr. Charles Fugler. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made in Ann's name to either the American Diabetes Associationor the American Heart Association. The family would like to thank all of Ann's doctors who played such a large part in giving her a good quality of life. They would also like to thank the nursing staff in the Trauma Neurological Critical Care Unit at Our Lady of the Lake for their compassionate, dedicated and professional care to their wife and mother, and their friends and fellow church members for their devotion and prayers. We pray that God richly blesses them all.
