Verda Lee Owens Heck, a loving mother and grandmother, passed away unexpectedly on December 1 2018 at her home in Denham Springs, LA. Visitation is at Greenoaks Funeral Home from 9:00am-10:00am on Thursday, December 6, 2018. Memorial service to follow at 10:00am Her ashes will be interred in the Greg Windham Family Cemetery, Belah, LA at a private family service. Verda Lee was born November 5, 1954 to Dewey and Arah Windham Owens. She was named after her godmother, Verda “Aunt Dippy” H. LeGrange and her grandfather, Gregg Lee Windham. Verda was a native of Baton Rouge, LA and a graduate of Istrouma High School. Verda worked at Earl K. Long until its closure; then went to work at OLOL as a clinical access rep. She was very dedicated to her job. She is survived by her son, Gregory Heck and wife Ruthi, Denham Springs, LA and daughter Lindsay Heck Oudit, Denham Springs, LA. Survivors also include her grandchildren, Gregg Lee Heck, Tristan Oudit, Brennan Oudit, Jaiden Heck and Brayden Heck as well as her siblings, Vada Walters, Vena and Joel Jackson, Vincent Owens and Vicky Smith and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dewey and Arah Owens. Verda loved hummingbirds, the color purple, a good cup of coffee and Mexican food. Most of all she loved her family. She lived her life on her own terms and overcame many obstacles including the 2016 flood. She was determined, independent and feisty. Verda was taken away too soon, but it is good to know she is with God at peace. Memorial donations may be made St. Jude Children’s Hospital, the Baton Rouge Food Bank or the Methodist Children’s Home in Ruston, LA.
