

Vernon E. (Jack) Thompson of Baton Rouge, LA died peacefully June 10, 2016 at St. James Place in Baton Rouge. He was born December 8, 1925 in Jester, OK and moved to Lubbock, TX at the age of 10. He graduated from Lubbock High School and attended Texas Tech University. He was a decorated veteran in the US Army during World War II. After returning from military duty, he completed his degree at Texas Tech and worked in university administration at various universities in Texas until his retirement as the Executive Vice President of University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 1986. He was preceded in death by his wife, June S. Thompson, in 1993. He is survived by two sons, Jim Thompson and wife Jane of Baton Rouge and Vernon E. Thompson, Jr. and wife Sheryl of League City, TX; five grandchildren, Nancy Jones and husband Ricky of Baton Rouge, Jack Thompson and wife Anne of Washington D.C, Cameron Thompson of Houston, TX, Sara Shelton and husband Kevin of Huntsville, TX and Mary Thompson of Huntsville, TX; and one great-granddaughter, Daisy Jones of Baton Rouge. Jack was a tremendous man and a gentleman in the truest sense of the word. He loved his family and was extremely generous with everything he ever had. He moved to Baton Rouge in 1994 after a most difficult time in his life following the loss of his beloved wife. He made many friends at St. Luke's Episcopal Church and the Baton Rouge Historical Foundation in addition to all others he met. He will be remembered and cherished by many family and friends. Many thanks to the staff at St. James Highland Court and Baton Rouge Hospice for their compassionate care. The service will be held in Baton Rouge on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church with visitation from 9-11 AM and the service at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Baton Rouge Alzheimer's Association or St. Luke's Episcopal Church.
