Born on September 19, 1952 in San Luis, Argentina to Juan Aikman Harrington and Martha Olivia Jack, Wilfred grew up in San Juan and graduated from el Colegio De Arquitectos De San Juan in 1978. After moving his young family from Argentina to the United States in 1982, Wilfred went on to a career in Architecture where he worked for various firms and on many projects in the New Orleans and Slidell area. The most notable of which was his work on the popular Convention Center in downtown New Orleans.
Outside of his professional work as an Architect, Wilfred was heavily involved in volunteer work with the Red Cross, spending time in places like Haiti, Somalia, and even areas state-side that needed disaster relief after storms or other major events. In addition to volunteering with the Red Cross, Wilfred volunteered his professional expertise for many years with Habitat for Humanity, helping ensure communities have decent, safe, and affordable housing.
Wilfred, or “Abu”, as he was affectionately known by his grandkids, resided in Slidell but always had his heart in Argentina. A visit to Abu’s house typically included an asado (Argentine bbq) and one, or likely more, coffee or mate (Argentine herbal drink). He spent most of his time with his beloved friends in the Spanish community from St. Margaret Mary Church, as well as his fellow Argentines from Casa Argentina New Orleans.
Wilfred is survived by his children Patricio Harrington, Carla Harrington Edwards and her husband Matthew Edwards; three grandchildren Samuel, Lucia, and Mattie Edwards; sister Sylvia Lorna Harrington Ruiz and her husband, Jorge Ruiz Molina; and many other nieces and nephews from both the Harrington and Dumandzic families in Argentina. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Juan and Martha Harrington, and brother, Ian Aikman Harrington.
A visitation and funeral will be held on July 18, 2026, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 1050 Robert Blvd Slidell, LA 70458. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Red Cross.
