William C. Baker, 88, a native of Shreveport and a long-time resident of Baton Rouge, passed away on July 24, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nell Mack Baker Mobley and Conway O. Baker. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Anne Hungerbeeler Baker; three half-brothers, Phil Baker of Shreveport, Jerry Baker of Bossier City, and Jimmy Baker of Shreveport; and numerous nieces and nephews in Florida, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Texas.
Bill retired as Associate Executive Director of the Louisiana Association of Educators where he served for 22 years beginning with its predecessor, the Louisiana Teachers’ Association. He began his career as a sports writer for The Shreveport Times, Public Relations Director of the Shreveport Baseball Club, and a teacher at the Youree Drive Junior High School in Shreveport before moving to Baton Rouge in 1968 to join the staff of the Louisiana Teachers’ Association.
After retirement, he served 23 years as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Teachers’ Retirement System of Louisiana and was the first retiree trustee to ever serve as chairman of the Board.
Visitation will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd, on Monday, August 2, 2021 from 10:30 am until funeral service at 12 pm. Burial will follow in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Col. (ret) Henry Hungerbeeler, Charles Hall, Stuart Cagle, Dr. Jerry Baudin, Phillip Baker, and Richard McKay.
