
Dr. William C. "Bill" Dunbar passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008. He was preceded in death by his mother, Eleanor Lander Nelson; stepfather, Lewis D. Dunbar; and son, Nelson. Survived by his wife of 35 years, Mary; sons, Todd and Chris and daughter-in-law Michelle, of Lafayette; brother, Prescott and wife Sarah Dunbar, of New Orleans; aunt, Ethelbert Ott, of Pennsylvania; six grandchildren, Scott Reitzell, Derek Dunbar and Shawn Dunbar, all of Baton Rouge, and Stephen, Charlotte and Meredith, all of Lafayette; and great-granddaughter, Berkley. Bill was born Aug. 17, 1928, in New Orleans, and was a longtime resident of Baton Rouge. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the occupation of Japan. He earned his bachelor of science degree from LSU in Baton Rouge and medical degree from the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans. From 1958-1962, Bill was a general practitioner in Port Allen and coroner from 1961-1962. From 1962-1964, he was in family practice in Baton Rouge. In 1967, he completed his residency in radiology at Ochsner Foundation Hospital, New Orleans, and practiced radiology at Baton Rouge Clinic for 26 years until his retirement in 1993. He was a member of the East Baton Rouge Parish Medical Society and the Louisiana State Medical Society. In his younger years, Bill enjoyed tennis, racquetball and fishing. He also was an avid reader. Bill was loved by his family, friends, former employees and will be missed by all who knew him. We will especially miss his outrageous laughter and wit. Visitation at First United Methodist Church, 930 North Blvd., on Saturday, Jan. 3, from 10 a.m. until service at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Chris Andrews. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church or a charity of choice.
