

Winder “Hart” Dunbar, born July 19, 1930, passed away at home with his family on October 22, 2013, after a long and brave battle with cancer. He was a lifelong resident of Baton Rouge and the son of Winder Kendall Dunbar and Viola Hart Dunbar, both previously deceased now reunited with their only son. Hart attended Catholic High School in Baton Rouge and St. Edwards Military Academy in Austin, Texas. He was a decorated Petty Officer Third Class US Navy Korean War veteran who proudly served on the USS Salisbury Sound for 4 years. He was married to the love of his life, Shirley Jarreau Dunbar, for nearly 60 years. Hart & Shirley traveled the country, including Hawaii and Bermuda, in their retirement and enjoyed attending over 10 reunions with the US Navy regiment 13. As the last living member of the residing family at his mother’s childhood home, Magnolia Mound Planation, he enamored his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with his adventurous stories. While also enjoying a family retreat at Lake Rosemound in St. Francisville, Hart loved the ocean and was blessed with over 30 years of beach vacations with children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren. He was a retired private real estate investor and an active member of the Hart Estate board until his death at age 83. Hart is survived by his wife Shirley Jarreau Dunbar; their 3 children, Darlene Dunbar (Richard) LaBorde of Baton Rouge, Noel Dunbar (Don) Tweedel of O’Fallon, Illinois, and Winder (Constance “Libby”) Dunbar Jr. of Gonzales; 8 grandchildren, Adele Hilbun (Stan) Doiron, Alycia Hilbun (Monty) Bueche, Angie Hilbun, Kendall (Krista) Prestidge, Corbin (Becky) Prestidge, Colin Prestidge, Winder Emile “Ken” (Jacie) Dunbar and Constance Dunbar; and 10 great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend visitation from 5 to 7:30pm with a Rosary at 6pm, Thursday, October 24, 2013, at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd. Visitation will resume at 10am Friday, October 25, 2013, until the 11am funeral mass at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 12424 Brogdon Lane, with Father Jerry Martin as celebrant. Interment will follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Drew Hart; Stan Doiron; Monty Glen Bueche; and Hart’s grandsons, William Kendall Prestidge, Joseph Corbin Prestidge, Thomas Colin Prestidge, Winder Emile “Ken” Dunbar. Honorary pallbearers are his great-grandsons, Nathan Hart Doiron, Evan Bueche, Noah Prestidge, Ben Prestidge, Eli Prestidge, Mackey Dunbar, Kaiden and Cohen Prestidge. The family offers a heartfelt thanks to the staff and nurses with St. Joseph Hospice for their excellent care.
