Amparito Santos Santos

Amparito Santos Santos, nacio el dia 15 de junio de 1931 en Orocovis, Puerto Rico y falleció a sus 93 años de edad, el dia 18 de mayo de 2025 en Pearisburg, Virginia, Estados Unidos. Le sobreviven sus hijos Sonia N. Ginter, Miguel Angel Ríos Jr. y John Ruben Ríos quienes se encuentran muy apenados por su partida.

Amparito Santos Santos loved many people and many things. There was Miguel Angel Rios, the young man from Mayaguez, whom this young woman from Orocovis loved, married, and adored all her life. Her children, Sonia, Miguel, and John, she loved so much that she made sure they never heard a quarrel or disagreement between mother and father. Ever. Always it was love in the home she made and took care of.

She also loved cooking, or rather she loved people enjoying her cooking. And, they did. “¡Sabrosito!” was an adjective commonly voiced by family, friend, neighbor, repairman. If you entered her home, she cooked something for you: maybe a plate of arroz con gandules, maybe a jamón y queso sandwich, maybe a café con leche, which she loved to have herself.

There was also dominoes, a game she was always ready to play, and a game you had better take seriously if you sat at the table with her. Joking (She loved to joke around, too.) was allowed, as long as you didn’t miss a domino clue or didn’t lose count of plays. Doing either earned partners a savage stare-down and maybe even a “¡¿Pero qué es eso?!” (Only it sounded like one word.)

She loved writing songs and sharing them as much as possible. At church, at parties, at get-togethers. She loved frogs, as long as they weren’t real. She loved an occasional telenovela. She loved praying the rosary. She loved God. And her grandchildren, Lindsay, Emilio, Maia, and Joah. And the rest of her family. In Puerto Rico, New York, New Jersey, and elsewhere. And her neighbors, from Bayamon to Harlem and back again. She loved telling and passing down stories. And, those whom she knew and loved will surely continue telling stories about her, something that she would’ve probably loved, too.
