Agnes Young went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, July 19, 2005, at the age of 86, following a brief illness. Agnes was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on April 19, 1919, one of five children, to Henry James and Leona Davis. In 1921, her family moved to what was then Goose Creek, (Baytown) Texas, and she later attended Robert E. Lee High School.
Agnes was very active in her church, Trinity Tabernacle Assembly of God, which she began attending as a child. She met her future husband, Charles Young, while participating in the same Christmas play in December of 1935, at Trinity Tabernacle. They were married on May 24, 1936, in the first formal wedding ceremony to be held at Trinity Tabernacle. Her church was her life. She taught children’s Sunday School classes, worked in Vacation Bible School, and was very involved in Women’s Ministries. She and her husband were the directors of the Goldenaries seniors’ group for a number of years, where her chicken and dumplings were a hit.
Agnes participated in ministry with her church at Green Acres Nursing Home and Remington Park. She loved the residents, and had a way of making them smile by her sunny disposition and wit.
Agnes and her husband, Charles, loved to travel; through the years, they saw most of the United States and parts of Canada. Not only was she a wonderful wife and mother, but Agnes was a very loved “Nana” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Leona and Henry “Bob” Davis; a brother, Henry James “Bud” Davis; her son, Jimmy Lee Young; her granddaughter, Ginger Lynn Holzaepfel; and her son-in-law, Roy Dean Byrd. Agnes leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 69 years, Charles Young; sons, Clinton J. Young of Houston, and David Young of Waco; daughters, Marie Byrd of Pasadena, and Shirley Holzaepfel of Baytown; seven grandchildren, Rose Anne Byrd of La Porte, Deana Vespa of Fort Joy, Pa., James Byrd of Pasadena, Jeff Holzaepfel of Sugar Land, Staci Garner of Lufkin, Destiny Young and Brandon Young of Waco; five great grandchildren, and one great great grandson; sisters, Melba Atkins, Katherine Oliver, and Joy Belle Davis, all of Baytown; very special cousin, Betty Haltom of Baytown; sister-in-law, Estella Kerr of Baytown, brother-in-law, Al M.
