Barry was born April 9, 1962, in Pasadena, Texas where he was one of the first babies born at the new Bayshore Medical Center. He grew up in Deer Park loving fishing at Toledo Bend and Galveston Bay, hunting of all kinds, camping, diving, motorcycles, water sports and family time. Barry graduated from Deer Park High School while also working as a plumber at Modern Plumbing. He went on to earn his license as a Master Plumber in 1982, becoming one of the youngest in Texas to earn this achievement. Barry joined Shell Oil Company at the Deer Park Refinery in 1989 and celebrated his 26th anniversary this month. During his service, he has worked in most areas of the refinery in both Operations and Maintenance as a pipefitter.
When not working, Barry devoted 100% of his time to his wife and children; teaching them outdoor skills; helping them with homework; attending every sports and school event; and cooking dinner for his family almost every day. He was known in his circle of friends as a great cook who according to Marcy ""never disappoints."" Barry loved to travel with his wife taking her to most parts of the United States as well as rafting and waterfall repelling in Costa Rica, touring Australia and diving in the Great Barrier Reef and celebrating her 40th birthday with a gondola ride in Venice. One of his favorite parts of travel was experiencing local foods, especially off the beaten path.
Barry was happiest when he was taking care of and spending time with his wife and children. His favorite place was his Toledo Bend lake house where he enjoyed fishing, outdoor sports and relaxation on the swing overlooking the lake. He also especially enjoyed his deer lease in Tilden where he spent time with his children and special friends.
Barry was a man who wore many hats: father, husband, son, friend, and neighbor. Many people were touched by his life. God gave Barry a healthy desire to work long and hard and he used his gift to help others.
There has never been a better example of a devoted husband and father and true gentleman. His final act of service to others was the donation of his corneas and eyes so that others can see.
The family wishes to thank special members of the Maintenance Crew at Shell Deer Park Refinery for their friendship and support of Barry. Also, his special neighbor, Kay Raley, for her friendship and daily humor. Additionally, the physicians at Memorial Hermann Medical Center who tried valiantly to save his life and his two nurses on the Critical Care Unit, Carlo and Lowie, who gave special care to Barry and supported his family constantly for three days while they made difficult decisions. Finally, members of the Child Life Department who worked to help his children work through this personal tragedy.
A celebration of Barry's life will be held on Sunday, January 25, 2015, at Faith Presbyterian Church, 3900 N. Main St., Baytown, TX 77521, at 2:00 pm with the Rev. Dr. Jim Gill officiating. Faith Presbyterian Church will host a reception for the family following the service in the Fellowship Hall. Barry's family expresses its thankfulness to his church family and pastor for their loving support during these difficult days.
