

A Grand Lady, Bess Harbin Haggard, of Baytown was born March 14, 1914 in Dobbin, Texas to Evalyn and C. C. Haggard and went to join her Lord and Saviour on Friday, December 12, 2004. She was preceded in death by her husband and friend, James “Big Jim” Haggard; her brothers Clay Harbin, Robert Harbin, Hugh Harbin and Herbert Harbin; and sisters, Louise Harbin and Carolyn “Cookie” Hooks.
She is survived by her sons, James M. Haggard and wife Irene of Huntsville and Joel H. Haggard and wife Debbie of Fredericksburg; grandson and companion, Matthew “Matt” Haggard and wife Christina of Baytown; grandchildren, James Ryder and Taylor Leigh Haggard of Fredericksburg, and she was blessed with a great grandchild, Braxton Haggard of Baytown. Bess was well known for her 5cent burgers in her early years in Baytown and she was a long time employee of Sears. After retiring from Sears, she and Big Jim traveled Europe with Exxon and enjoyed each other until his death. It was often said of Bess that she would feed the world if she could. You could never visit her without being given food and refreshments. She loved people! She was a charter member of Memorial Baptist Church in Baytown and was involved with Magna Carta, DRT, DAR, Colonial Dames, and UDC. Bess was a Texan and promoted our state always.
Her family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home Sunday from
2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. A celebration of Bess’s life will be Monday, December 13, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at Navarre Funeral Home. Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Jacob Shannon Evergreen Cemetery in Dobbin, TX.
Serving as pallbearers will be Lonzie Hale, James Ryder Haggard, Robert Kerr, Kelly Hale, Jonathan Dittman and Fred C. Dittman Jr. Honorary pallbearer will be Watty Watkins.
