Betty Ann Mumm, 90, of Baytown, passed away Sunday, December 1, 2013 peacefully at home after an extended illness. She was born September 7, 1923 in Tampa, Florida to Violet and John Broach. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Fred Mumm, daughter Linda Bryant, three sisters, Lottie Gibbons, Vivian Kittrell, and Dottie Pochis. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Wayne Wilson, son-in-law Bob Bryant, brother-in-law Frank Pochis, grandchildren Kayla Wilson of Sidney, Australia, Jason Bryant of Baytown, Michelle Shumaker and husband Bryan of Pearland, TX, William Wilson and wife Kylie of Baytown, David Wilson of Conroe, TX and six great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Betty was of the Catholic faith and attended St. John's Catholic Church in Baytown.
Betty grew up in Tampa, FL and attended Hillsboro High School where she graduated with honors. She worked full time through High School and attended the University of Tampa as a Business Major. In 1941 Betty went to work for Sun Oil Company, in Tampa, as an office manager. With the start of WW II she took a position as the Secretary for the Post Exchange at McDill Air Force Base in Tampa. It was there she met and three months later married the love of her life, Fred Mumm. They were married for 67 years before his passing in 2012. Fred was sent to Okinawa, Japan as a Pilot Trainer and due to her position as a Civil Servant, Betty was able to join him but in some rather challenging living conditions.
After the war Fred and Betty moved to El Paso, Texas. In 1950 they opened Mumm's Travel Service, later to be renamed Betty's House of Travel, which they operated until retiring in 1989. Betty was the business manager and Fred was the PR man. Betty was famous for her ""attention to detail"" and never lost it all the way to her death. Betty enjoyed dancing, bowling, travelling and was an avid reader. With their travel business she was able to see most of the world but two of her favorite stories were; being on the inaugural cruise of the SS France and the inaugural flight of the Concord from Miami to Washington, D.C. After retiring she and Fred moved to Baytown, TX to be near their family. Betty, affectionately known as ""Freema"" held visiting with her family and entertaining friends on the patio at their cabin in Ruidoso, New Mexico as her greatest joys. Fred loved to tell stories and Betty was always there to make sure he got the details right. We loved to hear their stories and the end of a great generation for the family has come to pass. Betty will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Her family will receive friends at St. John's Catholic Church, 800 W. Baker Rd., Baytown, TX 77521 Friday, December 6, 2013 beginning at 9:00 a.m. with a Funeral Mass to follow at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Terence P. Brinkman officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The A21 Campaign at 427 E. 17th Street #F223, Costa Mesa, CA 92627 or at Thea21campaign.org.
