Christiana Eudora Farrel - Gaitan, lovingly known as Miss Eudora, passed away on October 23, 2026, at the age of 97. Born in Trinidad and Tobago on December 15, 1928, she made her home in Baytown Texas. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and pillar in her community.
Miss Eudora devoted her life to caring for others. She always made sure everyone had eaten before she sat down to her own meal, and anyone who stopped by her home was welcomed and fed. She loved cooking for family and friends, and no one could make a ham and split peas soup quite like she did. She also loved children, who were drawn to her gentle, welcoming nature.
A talented and enterprising woman, Miss Eudora ran a business and shared her sewing skills with the community. She spoke both English and Patwah fluently, and her warmth helped her connect with people from many walks of life. Her home and her work were both expressions of her generous spirit and care she had for those around her.
She shared her life with her beloved husband, James Gaitan, and raised ten children. She also helped raise several of her grandchildren, giving them the same love and care she gave her own children. Her love extended to animals, too. Her family fondly remembers that she had twice as many dogs as children. She also lovingly cared for goats, cows, pigs, chicken, and just about any animal that came her way. She had a gentle spirit and not one to quarrel with others.
Miss Eudora loved traveling and especially enjoyed cruising. She continued cruising until the age of 92, making friends with everyone she met along the way. Whether at home, in her community, or aboard a ship, her warm and welcoming nature brought people together.
In her final days, she was surrounded by loved ones, young and old, whose presence showed how deeply she was cherished. They gathered around her with love and tenderness she had given so freely throughout a life well lived.
She is lovingly remembered by her ten children: Joan Inniss, Eugene Gaitan, Clement Gaitan, Linda Castillo, Margaret Moore, Catherine Haynes, Antonia Phillip, Robert Gaitan, Portia Dollarhide, and Sidney Gaitan; her stepson, Lennard Phillips, 33 grandchildren, 70 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren, along with extended family.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Mathilda Lendore and Mr. Francis; and step-father Reuben David; her husband, James Gaitan; her granddaughter; Stephlin Gaitan; her daughter-in-law; Patricia Gaitan; and her sons-in-law, Samuel Inniss, Steve Moore, and Dennis Castillo.
Miss Eudora's legacy lives on in every meal shared, every child welcomed, every garment sewn, every animal cared for, every friendship made, and every generation shaped by her love. She had a beautiful way of ending her conversations with the words "God is Love." Those words will continue to echo in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be remembered and loved always.
