Emmitt N. ""Sarge Wakefield

Emmitt ""Sarge"" Wakefield, 92 of Baytown passed away on Monday, November 26, 2012 at his home. Emmitt was born September 27, 1920 to Edith and Isaac Wakefield. He joined the Army in 1935. On May 14, 1946 Emmitt married the love of his life, Ruby Jo Ward; this was a union that would last fifty five years. After serving in WWII and Korea, he retired from the Army in 1963 at the rank of Master Sergeant. Emmitt then began working at Lee College as a professor for over ten years. He was a jack-of-all-trades, mastering things such as woodworking, hunting, fishing and cooking to name a few. Emmitt was especially known for his green thumb. He went so far as to graft an apple tree to an orange tree, with success.

Emmitt was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Ruby and son-in-law, William Strickland. He is survived by his children, Naomi Wakefield, Wanda Strickland, Debra Ann Rice (James), and Jaime D. Wakefield, all of Baytown, Emmitt W. Wakefield (Margaret) of Cherokee, NC and Edith Rochow of Conway, AK; brother, ""Hoppie"" Wakefield, of north TX; sister, Ruth Cherry, also of north TX; fifteen grandchildren; five great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Navarre Funeral Home in Baytown.
