Helen Carroll Johnson, 93, passed away quietly at St. James House in Baytown, Texas. Born in Huntsville, Texas, on April, 8 1918, she moved to Baytown with her mother Lucile Carroll, when her father, Jimmy, returned from his service in WWI. She attended Baytown Elementary and was a member of the first class to graduate from Baytown Junior High. Her high school years were spent at St. Agnes Academy in Houston, where she graduated with Honors. She earned a Bachelor's degree from Rice Institute in 1939, a time when few women were enrolled there. After attaining a teacher's certificate at Sam Houston State University, she began her teaching career at Baytown Junior High in 1940. A devoted mother and wife, she dedicated herself to her great love of teaching for over 30 years. During WWII, she was a secretary at the Baytown Ordnance Works, where she met her beloved husband, George, to whom she was married for 58 years, until his death in 2000 at the age of 87. They remained lovingly devoted to each other, enjoyed their quiet home life together and did some extensive travelling in Spain, France, England, Hawaii, Alaska, and the Pacific Northwest, where they always made new friends. Throughout their married life, they made frequent trips to California where they enjoyed visiting with George’s sisters and their many children and grandchildren.
They also travelled to Louisiana often to visit with niece Lorna and her husband Darrel, and watched their two children David and Susan grow up in the process.
Helen is survived by her sons, Eric Johnson of Houston and Dr. G David Johnson of Washington, DC, her sister Ouida Carroll, and many loving nephews and nieces.
