Born in Los Herreras, Nuevo León, Mexico to parents Demetrio and Beatriz Salinas, Herman immigrated with his family to the United States in 1949, settling in Baytown, Texas. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1957 and enlisted in the United States Army in 1959, serving two years of active duty and four years in reserve duty.
He attended Lee College and built a long, successful career in the oil and polyurethane industries along the Houston Ship Channel. He retired in 1996 from the Bayer Corporation following 25 years of service as a Lab Supervisor. Always enterprising, Herman became a real estate broker during the ’70s to further expand his skillsets and maximize his earning potential.
A devoted father and grandfather, he loved spending time with his wife of 45 years, Maria Blanca, catching up with his siblings, and checking in with friends. Herman enjoyed mentoring family and friends as they embarked on new challenges. Grateful for the myriad of opportunities afforded to him, he often spoke of the impact teachers, employers, and friends had upon his life. He actively sought opportunities to show others the same kindness.
Baseball and golf were his favorite sports. As a young man, he played baseball on school teams and in the military. The latter enabled him to travel throughout Germany with his Army team, the Bamberg Riders.
Eventually, the golf course replaced the baseball diamond, beginning a love affair with the greens that would last more than 60 years. His athleticism and keen intellect made him a natural on the links. Always competitive, he found tremendous enjoyment when he played with “The Oldtimers,” friends he had known for most of his life.
Herman was preceded in death by his parents, Demetrio and Beatriz Salinas. He is survived by his wife Maria Blanca Salinas, his daughter and son-in-law, Jacqueline (Albert) Guerrero, his son and daughter-in-law, Esau (Rocio) Salinas, his son, Jacob Salinas, grandchildren, Caroline (Scott) Wiesmann, Juliana Guerrero, Roxanna Nieto, and Elio Salinas, brothers, Fermin (Elisa) Salinas, Oliver (Hilda) Salinas, Demetrio (Maria) Salinas, Jr., sisters, Martha Nevarez and Irma (John) Ruiz.
The service will be Friday, January 22, at 11:00 am, Earthman Baytown Funeral Home, 3919 Garth Road, Baytown, TX 77521.
