Ivan Joseph Butrick passed away peacefully, after 89 years, on the evening of his Lord and Saviors Birthday. His bride of 63 years holding his hand and his loving family was by his side. What a present for Jesus!
Joe was born on July 7, 1930 in Springfield, Missouri to Walter and Delta Butrick. He is survived by his wife Barbara Lee Butrick. They were never far apart for their 63 years. They could always be caught holding hands, stealing a kiss, or just leaning into one another no matter where they were. A true love story that included all the twists and turns that one’s life can bring.
He is also survived by his son, Barry Butrick, daughter, Lisa Marti and granddaughters, Clara and Madeline Marti. Joe grew up on a farm in Missouri and worked hard alongside his three brothers, Bob, Kenny, and Earl, and two sisters, Wilma and Mary. He is survived by his sister, Mary Nederveld, as well as many numerous nieces and nephews that will all miss his smile and sense of humor that always lit up the room!
Joe served his country in the Air Force during the Korean War and soon after returning, graduated from South West Missouri State University with a Business Degree. He began his life-long career in retail with the J.C. Penney Company, where he formed life-long friendships and worked from 1956 until he opened his first Mister B’s Menswear in 1971. Joe met the love of his life by selling her a beautiful pair of shoes! He always loved to be well-dressed and was rarely caught without his beautiful head of hair combed just so and a smile on his face.
The JC Penney Company brought his family to the Houston area in 1961 and to Baytown in 1965. He loved being a part of his church family, Memorial Baptist, and the people he formed bonds with through Sunday School and serving alongside over the years. He was extremely giving to his friends and community and over the decades was involved in Rotary Club, YMCA, Baytown Chamber, American Cancer Society, and even taught classes at Lee College after retiring.
Through his life he loved to travel and made memories with family and friends in many destinations….and it almost always included a golf course, a white sand beach, a beautiful lake or a snowy mountain! Later in life Joe spent many hours reading and cross-stitching beautiful quilts in the winter months when it was too cold to be on the closest golf course. Many will cherish great memories made with Joe, Mr. B, Dad, and JPa, and we find comfort in knowing that we will meet him again one day and spend eternity together!
The family would like to acknowledge Dr. Reza Khoshnevis, Dr. Chris Hayes and the Nurses of Signature Home Health for their wonderful care. Donations may be made to Memorial Baptist Church or Sterling Municipal Library.
The family will receive friends for visitation from 10 – 11 am, on Saturday, January 4, 2020, at Memorial Baptist Church, 600 W. Sterling Ave., Baytown, TX 77521. The memorial service will follow and begin at 11 am.
