

He was a 1942 graduate of Logansport High School in Logansport, LA. He attended Lee College in Baytown and was a U. S. Navy WWII veteran where he served as a seaman first class. He retired from Shell Oil Refinery and was a member of First Christian Church of Baytown.
James was a devoted family man who enjoyed all sports and coached baseball at East Little League in Baytown as his children grew up. His hobbies included working in his yard and playing golf. He enjoyed a humorous tale, as well.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James, Sr. and Lois Cherry, and mother-in-law Velma Latapie. He is survived by his wife Willena Cherry, and son and daughter-in-law, Ric and Theresa Cherry of Maui, HI, daughter Cheryl Conley of Houston, and son Jimmie Cherry of Baytown, and grandchildren Michel Cherry of Honolulu, HI, Lauren Conley of Houston, Ryan Conley of Austin, and sister Betty Rochelle of Beaumont, and niece Rhonda Peck and nephews Randy and Larry Rochelle and Bobby Peck.
Serving as pallbearers are Bill Box, Raymond Torres, Rusty Beckman, Glenn Mason, Kenny Bernard, and Pat Way.
His family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home, Friday from 6 pm until 8 pm. Funeral services will be Saturday, February 10, 2007 at 10 am at First Christian Church, 201 Forrest Avenue, Baytown, TX 77520 with Rev. Robert Dees officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery with military rites.
