

James John Hughes Jr., 85, of Highlands, passed away Sunday, December 14, 2008 in a Baytown healthcare facility. James was born October 17, 1923 in Goose Creek to James John and Mattie Mae Davis Hughes Sr. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sue Hughes Franta; brother, P.J. Hughes and sisters, Mae Rayon and Mary Little and his loving cat, Mittens. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Hughes of Highlands; sons and daughters in law, John Leonard Hughes and wife Glenda of Highlands, Richard Lee Hughes and wife Jean of Austin, and Dr. James John Hughes III and wife De of Conroe; daughter and son-in-law, Becky Barnett and husband Steve of Cove; 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
James retired from ExxonMobil Corporation as a Process Supervisor and loved woodworking making toys for children. He was a plain guy who enjoyed working in his yard and being with his family. He was a dedicated volunteer fireman and spent 35 years with the Highlands Volunteer Fire Department. He served as Fire Chief and on the Board of Directors. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WW II.
Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at Navarre Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be Thursday, December 18, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at Navarre Funeral Home with Reverend Beau Rosser officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarcrest Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be members of the Highlands Volunteer Fire Department.
