In 1966 he was drafted by the United States Army and served alongside his brother Alton in the Vietnam War until 1968. During his time of service, JD received the Purple Heart medal.
JPaw enjoyed being with his family. Especially telling war stories and talking about guns with his three grandsons Chance, Brant and Austin. JD was an outdoorsman. He had a passion for spending time in the Colorado Mountains, passing his passion on to his children and grandchildren. JPaw was considered by his grandchildren as one of the strongest people they know. He beat all odds, surviving his 5 month diagnosis 5 years without complaining.
JD is preceded in death by his son James Darryl Travis; his parents, Buddy Travis and Betty Maxwell; and brother, Richard Travis.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Bonnie Travis; his two daughters,
Jaime and husband Jason Herrington, Alicia and husband Kenneth Collier; three grandsons, Chance Collier, Brant Capps and wife Mila, James Austin Travis and wife Edy; two great grandsons, James Abel Travis and Andrew James Capps; and his two brothers, Alton Travis and Lidge Travis.
The family will receive friends for a visitation at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 13, 2024 in the Chapel of Navarre Funeral Home, with funeral service to follow at 11:00 am.
Burial with full military honors will immediately follow in Cedarcrest Cemetery, Baytown, TX.
Pallbearers will be Austin Travis, Brant Capps, Jason Herrington, Kenneth Collier, Aubrey Lambert and Charles Lambert.
Honorary Pallbearers: Abel Travis, Andrew Capps, and Chance Collier.
