Janice “Jan” Bishop Havis, 86, formerly of Baytown, TX was born March 14, 1932, in Conehatta, MS to Samuel and Sallie Bishop and passed away Saturday, August 25, 2018 in Houston. She was a graduate of Conehatta High School and moved on her own to Baytown in 1950 before she was even 19 years old to work as an interim manager at a ladies’ clothing store. Interim developed into permanent when she met a man by the name of Jack Havis, who was making deliveries to her store. Jan and Jack married in 1952, and lived most of their married life in Baytown with their beloved sons Dwayne and Neal. Jan worked in various positions around Baytown and was an active volunteer at Grace United Methodist Church.
Jan was a kind, soft-spoken and caring soul, who was always taking care of those around her. She loved her church, growing her flowers and plants, working with the Church Women United’s thrift store supporting the Child Care Center of Baytown, and volunteering at Brenham State Supported Living Center to bring joy, fun, and happiness to her son and the other residents there.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents and husband of 60 years, Jack Havis, who died in 2013. She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Dwayne and Celeste Havis of Cedar Park and Neal Havis of Brenham; sisters and brothers-in-law, Nan and George Owens of Tomball and Mary and Daniel McNamara of Jackson, MS; brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe and Juanita Bishop and Harold Bishop, all of Jackson, MS and Truman and Glenda Bishop of Conehatta, MS; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary “Sisty” and Dalton Clanton of Baytown.
