Our beloved father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Joe R. Dreyer, Jr., 93, of Baytown, Texas, passed away May 19, 2024, with his family by his side. He was born in Goose Creek, Texas June 23, 1930, to Joe R. Dreyer, Sr. and Annie Bell Clepper Dreyer.
Joe was always a hard worker and his attention to detail carried over to every aspect of his life: career, bookkeeping, cars, punctuality, carpentry and yard work. Joe was famous in the family for being able to fix or build anything and for also never leaving the house without looking spiffy and smelling of Old Spice!
At age 13 he started working with his Uncle Cliff Boyer at his printing shop in Goose Creek. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1948 and attended Lee College. He then went into the U.S. Navy serving in the Korean War as a Naval Air Aviation Machinist for 4 years and won numerous awards for detailing the planes. He was also a mail carrier before he was hired at Celanese Polymer/Soltex and worked there for 25 years.
He married the love of his life, Sylvia Guillote, in 1962 and they were married for 60 years. Joe and Sylvia enjoyed traveling through Europe, Asia, Canada, Mexico, Central America and took many cruises and enjoyed many trips with the Lee College travel group. He loved his Polka music and enjoyed attending the Wurstfest for many years. He and Sylvia dearly loved playing cards and dominoes with family and friends and Joe was usually the victor. For many years he read two papers cover to cover daily and his wit, common sense and keen mind prevailed to the end.
Joe and Sylvia were dedicated members of Eastside Baptist Church for many years and then joined Cedar Bayou Baptist Church where he sang in the choir and was the treasurer.
Predeceasing Joe was his mother and father, Joe and Annie Bell Dreyer, his wife, Sylvia, a son, Charles Coleman, a son in law, Gary Hood, and his sister, Betty Flower. Those that remain to continue cherishing his memory are daughters Alicia Guillote and Deborah Hood, grandchildren Serena Garza, Laura Lofton (James), Skyla Patterson (Nick), Kevin Coleman, Ali Manalansan (Justin), Austin Almanza and Aaron Almanza. His great granddaughters are Kellis Lofton, Sadie Patterson and Scarlett Patterson.
We cannot fail to mention our devoted caretakers Lucinda Francis, Yvonne Isaac, and Sandra Young. Their loving and patient dedication exceeded all expectations. They were “Joe’s Angels” and are part of our family.
Finally, Joe demonstrated integrity throughout his life and left a legacy for his family to emulate. He was fortunate to live his life surrounded by a loving family and we are thankful that he was our Dad and Pawpaw and a worthy example to follow.
Visitation will be held from 12-1 pm, Friday, May 24, 2024 at Cedar Bayou Baptist Church, 3116 N Alexander Dr, Baytown, TX 77520. Funeral service will begin at 1 pm. Committal will follow at Cedarcrest Cemetery, 3010 Ferry Rd, Baytown, TX 77520.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Austin Almanza, Aaron Almanza, Kevin Coleman, Justin Manalansan, Nick Patterson; and Beto Garza.
