Johnie graduated from Nacogdoches High School and went on to obtain a master’s degree from Stephen F. Austin State University in 1971.
Johnie served in the Air Force and was stationed overseas in Germany. He later taught Texas History for over 30 years, sharing his steady knowledge and deep respect for the past with generations of students and with anyone who would listen. In 1998, he retired early from teaching to help care for his wife as she went through cancer—an enduring reflection of his kind-hearted devotion and the love he carried for his family.
Johnie married Willena Raschke in Highlands, Texas, in 1969. Together they built a life rooted in care and commitment. He is survived by his two daughters, Jana Wise of Lukin, Texas, and Judy Rash (Mike) of Cedar Park, Texas; five grandchildren, Daniel, Leslie, William, Kimberly, and Julie; and his sister, Alice.
Johnie was preceded in death by his wife, Willena Wise; his parents, Johnie Lewis Wise and Estelle (Mooney) Wise; and his siblings, Linda Flowers and Taylor Wise.
Johnie found joy in visiting important sites in Texas history, a lifelong interest that mirrored the wisdom he so naturally shared. In his young adult years, he enjoyed square dancing, and he also loved collecting owl figurines—small keepsakes that suited a man remembered for a thoughtful, steady presence.
Beloved by those who knew him, Johnie was always there for family—to support, encourage, and stand close when it mattered most. He will be greatly missed and mourned.
The family would like to thank everyone who reached out sharing their love for and admiration of Johnie. Thank you for your condolences and support.
