Early Life and Education:
Lanny was born on December 28, 1942, in Corrigan, Texas, to Methodist minister the Rev. Joseph Paul Horton of Detouti, Arkansas, and Stella Hazel Geaslin Horton of Cold Springs, Texas. The youngest of three children, he had an older sister, Sarah Horton Johnson, and an older brother, Joe Paul Horton.
As the son of a Methodist minister, Lanny lived in communities throughout Texas during his school years. After graduating from high school in Galena Park, Texas, he attended Lon Morris College in Jacksonville, Texas. While considering a move to Ohio for employment opportunities, he was drafted into the United States Army.
Military Service, Career, and Family:
Lanny served his country in the United States Army from 1964 to 1967 during the Vietnam era, with assignments in West Germany and Korea. He later settled in Baytown, Texas, and began working at Exxon Mobil on June 19, 1968. Over a 32-year career, he became a dedicated employee and a steadfast provider for his family. His work ethic left a lasting impression on his children: work hard, give more than expected, and trust that things will work out in the end—and for Lanny, they did.
On January 3, 1970, Lanny married Ann Elizabeth Bush Horton. Together, they shared a beautiful life and marriage until her passing and were blessed with two children, Kathryn Lyn Horton and Kenneth Lynn Horton.
A Lifelong Love of Sports:
Lanny was a passionate athlete throughout his life. He enjoyed basketball, racquetball, tennis, and swimming, but baseball held a special place in his heart. After retiring from Exxon Mobil in 1999 as the DEW/PDU/LDU dayshift chief, he traveled the world playing in several competitive senior softball leagues. His games took him to Japan, Cuba, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and tournaments across the United States—especially in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Always ready to join a game, regardless of the players’ ages, Lanny often heard them call, “Get that old man out here! Let’s play ball!”
Those Who Went Before Him:
Lanny was preceded in death by his parents Paul and Stella; his siblings, Sarah and Joe; and their spouses, Odell and Sybil, respectively. He was also preceded in death by his beautiful and loving wife, Ann; his best friend and brother-in-law, Van Bush, Ann’s twin brother; another brother-in-law, Kenneth Lynn Price; and their mother, Ethel Mae Roden Bush, who loved Lanny as one of her own children.
He was also preceded in death by a special couple, Joe and Nell Williams, the parents of his current wife, Linda Marie Morgan Horton. Lanny shared many happy times with them traveling, camping, and attending local senior softball tournaments.
