Larry was born to Milfred Alfred Teel and Dorothy Faye Teel, April 4, 1945, in Commerce, Texas. He graduated from C.E. King High School in 1963. He married his high school sweetheart, Pamela Gail Spencer, in 1964, and they made their home in Houston, Texas. Together they had three children before parting ways. In 1993 Larry found love again and married Betty Jorene (Jo) Teel and remained married to her until his death.
Larry is survived by his wife Jo, and his three children: James Larry (Jimmy) Teel; Michael Wayne Teel and his wife, Penny; Stacy Gail Teel Diehls and her husband, Jeff. He also leaves to cherish his memory, his sister, Lana Gale Pate and her husband, Johnny Earl Pate. He leaves behind his grandchildren whom he loved dearly: DeVinn Summers (Dylan), Heaven Hensley (Adam), Kody Teel (Kendall), Derrick Diehls (Jasmine) and Faith Diehls. Larry is also survived by seven beloved great-grandchildren. In his extended family, Larry has two bonus stepsons and their children: Larry Giddings (Bonnie) and Dale Giddings (Anjeanette). Numerous other family members and a great many friends also mourn Larry’s loss.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Milfred and Dorothy Teel.
Being mechanically minded, Larry could fix just about anything. As a teen-ager, he worked alongside his dad in his father’s neighborhood garage; the knowledge and experience he got during these years served him well in his future. He got his first car, a 57 Chevy, soon after his sixteenth birthday. He loved that car; it was probably the cleanest and best running car in the community.
Larry was generally quiet by nature, but no one ever doubted how he felt about anything. His honesty made him come across quite blunt at times; but you knew that if he said it, then it was the truth as he knew it. Even though he wasn’t one to outwardly show affection, his family members knew he loved them deeply. He looked after beloved family members up until his final days.
Larry was drafted into the army in 1965 and proudly served his country. He was stationed first at Fort Hood, Texas and later at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma.
As a master electrician for many years, Larry worked his way up the ladder in several different companies and became well-respected as a supervisor. In 1992 his company sent him to Las Vegas where he was in charge of the electrical installations at the new Luxor Hotel and Casino. During his stay there, Larry met his wife, Jo. He brought his new bride back to Texas with him in 1993; Jo immediately became an important part of the Teel family.
Larry loved to listen to music. As a child, Larry’s dad would sing as the family traveled to East Texas to visit a multitude of relatives. As an adult, Larry would often listen to taped music on road trips with his children. They remember one trip to Florida where he listened to one Crystal Gayle tape over and over.
Larry had an adventurous side. He and Jo purchased motorcycles and rode side-by-side on many road trips through the years. Sometimes they took short day-trips alone and sometimes they joined a group of other motorcycle enthusiasts for longer trips. They also had jet skis and loved taking family members out on the water.
A lot of people become sedentary after retiring. That did not happen to Larry. He and Jo bought a second home in Quartzsite, AZ. They had a fantastic view of a vast mountain range from their front porch. Every November for eight years they left their home in Crosby and drove to Quartzsite where they stayed until late March or early April. Larry was a wonderful host when family members visited; he loved showing them the sights near his AZ home. He had a couple of all-terrain vehicles and took his visitors through some rocky terrain and isolated mountain trails on his ATV.
In April of 2025 Larry’s family had a surprise 80th birthday celebration for him. He was a little embarrassed by the attention but definitely touched by the love and affection shown to him.
Larry’s love, devotion and care for his family will live on in their hearts and minds. His logical, straight-thinking approach to life has been passed on to his children and grandchildren and his legacy will live on through them.
The family would also like to thank the doctors, nurses and other staff members at Houston Methodist Baytown Hospital for their loving and expert care during Larry’s final days.
