Lula Fay Benes, 92, of Baytown was born November 20, 1926, at home in Goose Creek, Texas to parents Lula and Theo Wilburn, and passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2019, in a Baytown hospital. She was a 1944 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School and University of North Texas in Denton where she earned a bachelor degree in education. She was a third grade teacher for many years. She was a longtime member of St Mark’s United Methodist Church. On June 17, 1950, she married John Paul Benes. They were married 57 years upon his death.
Lou was a charter member of the first Baytown Beta Sigma Phi chapter, Kappa Kappa in 1950. She was a member of Alpha Mu Master and held the highest degree of Torch Bearer. Up until her death she loved hosting her sorority in her home for meetings.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by her sister, Jerilyn Wilburn Novosad; children and grandchildren, John Theo Benes and wife Terry, Carol Sue Green, Lydia Fay Corcoran and husband Mike, Travis Theo Benes and wife Shelby; great grandchild, Sara Corcoran; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She will be missed by many. In lieu of flowers and other remembrances, memorial donations may be made to St Mark’s United Methodist Church in Baytown.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at 10 a.m. at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 3811 N Main St, Baytown, TX 77521, followed by the funeral service which will begin at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Cedar Bayou Masonic Cemetery in Baytown.
