Martha Ellen Roberts was born in Cooper County Missouri on January 21, 1926. She left this life in Baton Rouge on May 24, 2017. Martha was the only daughter, along with three older brothers, of Cynthia and Roy Roberts.
After graduating high school, Martha contributed to the war effort by working in an aircraft assembly plant in Kansas City. As the war was drawing to a close she met a young soldier from Texas, Rex Leo Elliott. At the close of the war, after discharge, Rex returned to Missouri, where they were married in August of 1946. The couple returned to live in Goose Creek, and they made their homes in the Baytown area—except for one adventurous year in Thessaloniki, Greece-- until Rex’s death in 2008. In that time they raised three children, Rex, Neva and Alan.
Martha enjoyed people and was active in The Tri-City Grandmothers’ Club, Highlands Book Review Club, and Cedar Bayou Methodists Quilt Club. She was a member of south Main Church of Christ for many years.
Families grew and moved apart. Grandchildren were added to the mixture.
Shortly after Rex’s death, Martha moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to be closer to her daughter, Neva, and her children. She got to watch those children she had not seen enough graduate college and start families of their own.
On the day of her passing the family was blessed with the birth of another great-grandchild, Eliot Meeks, to Marcy, the daughter of her younger son Alan.
Martha is survived by her three children and their spouses: Rex Elliott (Lynne), Neva Carter (Dale), and Alan Elliott (Stacy). Grandchildren who will miss her include: Jeanette Towster(Robert), Jill Carter, Sally Goode(Alan), Christopher Carter, Marcy Meeks (Steve), and Matthew Elliott. Her great-grandchildren also include Henry Towster, Jack Towster, Carter Goode, Luke Goode, and Patrick Goode. Beloved nieces include: Bonnie Meyer, Karen Roberts, Gail Pickering, Carolyn Elliott, Kaye Butler, Deborah Beard, Karen Adams, and Charlotte Favor.
A funeral service is planned for Saturday, June 3rd at Earthman Funeral Home in Baytown, TX. Visitation will begin at 10:00am, followed by the service at 11:00am.
