Mary Margaret graduated from Lamar High School in Houston. She attended Rice Institute (now Rice University) and graduated with distinction in 1948. She later earned a Masters Degree from The University of Houston.
While at Rice, she met Henry N. Armstrong and they were married by her uncle, The Rev. (later Rt. Rev.) Scott Field Bailey on November 24, 1948 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Houston. Because of Henry's coaching assignments and military service, they lived in Alice, TX, San Angelo, TX, Denver, CO, San Clemente, CA and Corpus Christi, TX during the early years of their marriage. In 1956, the family moved to Baytown, TX where Mary Margaret and Henry remained for the rest of their lives.
In Baytown, Mary Margaret taught kindergarten for six years at Trinity Episcopal Church and first grade at Lamar Elementary School for twenty-five years, where she touched the lives of the children who passed through her classroom. An important part of her life was her fifty-seven year membership at Trinity Episcopal Church in Baytown where she served on the Vestry. Mary Margaret was a member of St. Cecilia's Guild, C. S. Lewis Guild, Thursday Forum, Women of Wisdom at Trinity and the Service League of Baytown. She loved to play bridge and read, and she always enjoyed the challenge of a good puzzle. She was blessed with many friends and was especially close to Maxine Stallknecht, Sue Gillette and Kathleen Graf.
Later in life, she was grateful for the devotion of her primary caregiver, Nancy Walker, along with neighbor Clinton ""Bubba"" Shaw, Carol Campbell, Humble Care and Dr. Chris Hays and the staff and volunteers at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown.
Mary Margaret's parents, her brother, George D. Wilson, Jr. and her husband of fifty-six years predeceased her. She is survived by a son, H. Scott Armstrong and his wife Laura of Spanish Fort, AL, a son, Lee N. Armstrong of Baytown, a grandson, Travis S. Armstrong and his wife Amanda of Nashville, TN and a granddaughter, Laurie C. Armstrong, also of Nashville. An aunt, a niece, a nephew, a number of cousins and all their families also survive her.
A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, 5010 North Main Street, Baytown, TX 77521 on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. with a reception immediately following. The Rev. Nick Novak will officiate. If desired, remembrances may be made in her memory to the Trinity Episcopal Church Building Fund.
