Mary Marguriete Harvey, 100 years old, passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2023. Mrs. Mary Marguriete Garlington Harvey is the daughter of Charlie Eugene Garlington and Mary Elize Mobley Garlington. Mary Marguriete is preceded in death by her husband Preston Lambert Harvey, her parents, and 7 of her siblings. She was the oldest (girl) of 9 children. She is survived by her youngest sibling, Katie Joe Garlington Jordan.
Born on July 20, 1923 in Vienna, (Lincoln Parish) Louisiana. Her family moved from their first homestead in Vienna before 1930 to Quitman, (Jackson Parish) where she loved playing basketball. Marguriete worked at the age of 14 at the local tomato cannery for $ .05 a bucket. Shortly after she started the job the child labor laws were passed and she was too young to work...she was not happy. As a young adult during WWII, Marguriete worked in the armory counting boxes of ammunition on the train cars. Later she worked in the Southern Bag and Paper Company, a local paper mill in Hodge, (Jackson Parish) Louisiana.
Marguriete was the wife of Preston L. Harvey, who she met at the local gas station after the Korean war when he was discharged from the Navy. She was having a soda and he introduced himself. They were married 6 months later in January of 1953. In 1954 they welcomed their first child, Marilyn Kay and second in 1958, Richard Harvey.
In 1955 and again in 1959 they moved to Houston, (Harris County) Texas after traveling throughout Louisiana and Texas when Preston was working in oil and gas for Hycalog. They settled in Songwood, Houston, Texas and lived there until 1995 when they moved to Woodforest, Houston, Texas.
Marguriete was a hair dresser. She opened her own hair salon, Marguriete's Beauty Shop, in 1963 in Jacinto City, (Harris County) Texas. She owned the shop until 1988, however she continued working at the same location for another 15 years. Her two children, three grandchildren and first great granddaughter all worked in the beauty shop and helped out with thing from folding towels, sweeping hair, cleaning wash bowls and styling tools. Marguriete retired from hair dressing at the age of 91.
Marguriete had, to this day, an incredible work ethic and shared it with her family. Marguriete is a strong woman of faith and she raised her family in the loving light of Jesus Christ our Lord and God the father. In 1955, she was a founding member of Market Street Baptist Church on Federal Road in Houston, Texas and is their oldest member. Her favorite verse is John 3:16 and her favorite songs are Sweet Beulah Land, Precious Memories and How Great Thou Art. Her passions in life were her faith, family, friends, card/board/domino games, quilting, and cooking. She passed her passions along to her family and the importance of each. She believed strongly in her faith and that the only way to a happy, healthy life and the road to Heaven is the Lord Almighty.
Marguriete is survived by her daughter Marilyn Kay Harvey Allen and son Richard Harvey; her grandchildren Tivona Laverne Cunningham, Preston Ryan Harvey, Brittany Nicole Harvey Cotton; her great grandchildren Gianna Farancesca Watson, Case Cotton, and Avery Cotton; and many nieces and nephews.
