Meredith Massey passed away Wednesday, October 22, 2008 after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Meredith was born on April 7, 1924 in Fort Scott, Kansas to Roscoe and Thelma Lewis Linn. She graduated with a degree in bacteriology from Mississippi State College for Women in 1949, the same year she was recruited by Humble Oil & Refinery and moved to Baytown, which would become her permanent home. It was here that she met and married her husband, Melvin Massey. Meredith was an active member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and served on numerous committees over the years. She thought of St. Mark's as her second family. She loved everyone there, and they loved her.
Meredith was deeply devoted to her family and her friends, and her love and care inspired devotion in return. She would help in any way she could, often even before she could be asked, and expected nothing in return. Her kindness and generosity touched everyone who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Melvin Massey. She is survived by her daughters, Deborah Chase and her husband Richard of Austin, Texas, and Nancy Lindquist and her husband Ron of League City, Texas. She was blessed with five grandchildren, all of whom loved their ""Goggy"": Bryan Chase, Jeremy Chase and wife Kristin, and Tara Chase of Austin, Texas, and Kylie Drennon-Lindquist and Kristina Lindquist of League City, Texas. She was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Blake and Brenna Chase.
Her friends were also very important to Meredith. Her life was enriched when her best friend and sister-in-law, Marjorie (Bunny) Head, moved back to Baytown later in life. The two were constant companions. They enjoyed many activities together, and were always on the go. Their friendship was special through the last day of her life. Another special friend was Ella Mae Thornton, who's years of service, companionship, and devotion meant so much to Meredith.
Serving as pallbearers will be Ron Lindquist, Richard Chase, Bryan Chase, and Jeremy Chase. Honorary pallbearers will be Lewis Irons and Monte Young.
