Rex Laroy Thain, Sr., 87, of Baytown, Texas, passed away on April 19, 2024, in Houston, Texas. He was born in Pelly, Texas (now part of Baytown), on October 15, 1936, to William and Laura Thain. Rex married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Betty Ann Heard, on June 2, 1956.
After a short time serving in the National Guard, Rex enlisted in the United States Air Force on April 20, 1958. He dedicated nearly 10 years of service to his country before re-enlisting in the Army, where he served an additional 12 years. Rex retired from active duty after a total of 22 years, 5 months, and 18 days, achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class. His military career was marked by numerous accolades, including The Vietnam Service Medal for 6 Campaigns, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Bronze Star Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, the National Defense Service Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, The Air Medal, and The Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Unit Citations. He also received 3 Good Conduct Award Medals and The Meritorious Service Medal.
Following his military service, Rex worked for and retired from Air Products in LaPorte, Texas. He was a devoted member of Central Baptist Church in Baytown and actively participated in the local chapter of Gideons International. Rex had a passion for antique cars, woodworking, and baking. He also enjoyed traveling with The Baytown Gadabouts RV Club.
Rex is survived by his wife of 67 years, Betty Ann Thain of Baytown, Texas, as well as his children: Rex, Jr. and Sherry Thain of Omaha, Texas; William (Buster) and Debbie Thain of Baytown, Texas; and Donald and Nancy Thain of Comfort, Texas. He leaves behind 13 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and his sister, Dorothy Foster of Baytown.
A visitation for Rex will be held Wednesday, April 24, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Navarre Funeral Home, 2444 Rollingbrook Drive, Baytown, TX 77521, with funeral service to begin at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in Sterling White Cemetery, 11011 Crosby Lynchburg Rd, Highlands, TX 77562.
The memorial service, officiated by Beau Rosser, will have Rex’s grandsons as pallbearers. The family expresses gratitude to the Richard A. Anderson Texas State Veterans Home and its staff for their love and care during Rex’s final days.
