

Bob was born October 14, 1922 in Humble, TX, to Nannie Cathrine and Edward E. Garvey. He was the last born of 5 children and the beloved baby of his family. He grew up in Baytown and finished school at Robert E. Lee high school in 1940. After high school Bob worked for the Coca Cola Company. When World War II broke out, Bob enlisted in the US Navy. He obtained the ranking of a Petty Officer First Class, serving as a Radio Operator/Gunnery man on SBD dive planes stationed in the South Pacific. When the war ended Bob returned to Baytown where he worked for the Exxon Oil Company for 38 years, retiring in 1984.
Bob met and married Beverly Doucet, his beloved wife of 53 years at Shadowlands Dance Hall in 1939. They were married on August 11, 1945 and honeymooned in Galveston. Bob and Beverly were blessed with a beautiful, red-headed daughter they named Kathryn. Bob created many special memories with Beverly and Kathryn, his devotion to his family visible to all who knew him. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends and sharing pastimes such as traveling, fishing, camping, hunting, watching old westerns, listening to country music, working on his car and garden, playing dominoes and cards, and occasionally heading to play the nickel slots.
Bob is survived by his two grandchildren, Jeff (Kim) Holmes-Hunter, Lititz, PA, and Denise Owen, Bellevue, WA. Great-grandchildren Kaleigh, Madeleine, Zoe & Zack Holmes-Hunter, Adam Owen, and Andrew Garvey Owen. He is also survived by his beloved older sister, Florence Garvey Page, Baytown, TX and his niece Mrs. Jane (Stan) Zielinski, Houston, TX. Other survivors include son-in-law Mr. Clifford Hunter, sister-in-laws Mrs. Frances Tomek, Mrs. Agnes Baker, Mrs. Martha Sick, brother-in-law Mr. Curtis (Patsy) Newberry, and many numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Bob was predeceased by his wife Beverly, daughter Kathryn, sisters Christine and Addie, brother Ed, and his mother and father.
Bob will be remembered for his sharp and accurate wit, his eye for detail, and the quiet inner strength that carried him through his life journey. Above all, Robert M. Garvey was a man of dignity, character and dedication to family. He died on his daughter’s birthday, a joyful celebration awaiting him; a fitting end to a life lived in service to others.
A visitation will be held from 6-8pm on Friday, September 21, 2007 at the Navarre Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Baytown. A celebration of Bob’s life will take place Saturday at 2pm at Navarre Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Baytown with Rev. Ron Page officiating. Graveside service immediately following at San Jacinto Cemetery. A reception will be held at the family home following the service. All are welcome.
Serving as Pallbearers will be: Kent Sick, Randy Sick, Cecil Sick, Vertis Tomek, Paul Barrickmam and Adam Owen.
