Robert William Murray, 84, of Baytown, Texas, passed away on September 14, 2020. He was born in Beaver Falls, PA on October 30, 1935 to Alfred W. Murray and Minnie Breit Murray. He was married to his wife Carol for 62 years.
Mr. Murray graduated from Geneva College in 1957 with a B.S. in Engineering. His initial work assignments involved the design of automation equipment. He was later drafted into the US Army Chemical Corps for development of warheads. After the Army, he started a 25 year career at General Electric Space Division. He was responsible for advanced life support equipment, including the Food Package, the Galley, and the Waste Management Systems for the Space Shuttle Orbiter. Later he was responsible for the High Gain Antenna for the Hubble Space Telescope, which to this day transmits exceptional photographs of the universe.
Mr. Murray was an avid drag racer through most of his adult life, competing in several different classes and categories, including Super Gas and Stock Eliminator. At the age of 73, he won the IHRA National Championship Event in Stock Eliminator.
He is survived by his wife Carol of Baytown,TX; his brother, Richard A. Murray of Phoenix, AZ; four children and their spouses Karen L. (William) Rambo of Newtown, PA, Robert G. (Lisa) Murray of Parkesburg, PA, Anne M. Murray (John Hampshire) of Celina, TX, and Dacia C. (Edward) George of Baytown, TX; and 5 grandchildren and their spouses Michael R. (Joleigh) Murray of Huffman, TX, Danielle L. Murray of Baltimore, MD and Alexander R. (Analyse) Murray of Palmyra, PA, and Jessica A. George and Emily M. George of Baytown, TX.
The family will receive friends for visitation from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., Saturday, September 19, 2020, at Navarre Funeral Home, 2444 Rollingbrook Dr., Baytown, Texas 77521. The memorial service will follow and begin at 12:00 p.m.
