Sadie Theresa Mayeux Rabalais, 90, went home to heaven on September 14, 2018, at St. James House in Baytown. Sadie was born July 20, 1928, to Clifford and Wavie Mayeux in Lafayette, LA. She was a graduate of Academy of the Sacred Heart and College of Grand Coteau, LA, followed by a Bachelor degree in Business from the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now UL). She was an active member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, a lifetime member of the Catholic Daughters of America, and earned the Child of Mary Medal. Sadie is preceded in death by her devoted husband of 58 years, Harold, and by her parents and sister, Essie Mayeux.
In all of her 90 years, Sadie found ways to laugh, serve, and love the people around her. She worked as an elementary school teacher and a parish librarian in the Baton Rouge area until she and Harold’s retirement and move to Texas. Here she became active in the Holy Trinity Catholic Daughters, Pilot Club, Friends of the Library, and the Mont Belvieu Senior Center. “Sadie the Cajun Lady” instilled a love of reading in her children, grandchildren, and students through frequent read-alouds of Dr. Seuss, Mother Goose, and many Cajun stories. She was loved by many, but she always laughed and said, “I love you MORE!” Through health problems and global wars, marriage and motherhood, lean times and plenty, she was a beautiful example of Jesus on earth.
She is survived by sister Vicki and Patrick Naquin, and brother Gene Mayeux; seven children: daughter Marie and Art Crowe of Wimberly, TX; sons and spouses Paul and Arla Rabalais of Fairfield, IA; Clifford and Michelle Rabalais of Bay St. Louis, MS, John Eric and Lindsey Rabalais of Rayne, LA; Martin Rabalais and Mardi Hammond of Wichita, KS; Karl and Beth Rabalais of Ft. Worth, TX; Joseph and Carla Rabalais of Mont Belvieu, TX. Sadie is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
