Doris grew up in Katy, Tx and graduated from Katy High in 1941. She moved to New York City after graduation to live with her sister where she met her future husband, John, on a blind date on Labor Day. They were married on March 3, 1944 2 ½ days before he was sent to the Philippines during WWII. He returned in 1946 and they made a trip back to New York to see his mother. They settled in Goose Creek and later moved to Highlands. Happily married for 62 years they left a legacy for their children. Marriage for them was 100% not 50/50. They were always holding hands, loving each other, setting an example for everyone to follow.
Doris was an active member of Second Baptist Church where she was WMU director for over 30 years. Her heart was missions. She also sang in the church choir in her younger years and taught many different Sunday School classes from the youngest children to the oldest ladies class.
For about 15 years she sold Avon and made many lasting friendships.
She was and artist. In her 60's she started taking art lessons and studied under Peggy Tieman.
She also helped her husband, John, in their photography business. Her job was tinting black and white portraits and assisting him at weddings.
Besides painting, she loved to travel, read, sew & cook, but most of all she loved to be with her large family. Her life will live on through her art work and the example she left with her family. They are her testimony of what God can do when one allows Him to live through you. Well done!
