I am very sorry to hear of Vernon’s death. Vernon worked with me at my company for a few years and was a very good worker. He was referred to as “Coach” by all the younger employees. He loved to talk to them about his football years as a player and a coach. When I passed by his home, I use to see him out working on his vehicles. I would stop and talk to him about all kinds of stuff. I will always remember him and be grateful for his work at my company and his friendship.

To young to be his friend so I knew nothing of his personal life except for the fact that a girlfriend, Beth Stanley, told me that he was a good student and a good guy. I was old enough to experience his athletic ability. Simply put, he was the best football player that I ever played for or against with the possible exception of Tommy Nobis.

Vernon was one of a kind. If you knew Baytown football when he played I have never in my life seen anybody hit somebody as hard as Vernon. Especially the Galena Park game in which the Ganders lost 7-6 and the Ganders had the best football team ever. I hope and pray Vernon you are at peace now. I always liked you. May you rest well my friend.
