Virginia Oliver entered into eternal rest on October 2nd, 2015, at the age of 79. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Evelyn Oliver and a brother, Gene Oliver. She is survived by her sons, Les Holcomb Jr., Mike Holcomb, Jon Holcomb, and Kelly Holcomb. She is also survived by Mike's wife, Suzanne, step daughters, Elizabeth Yolland and Wendy Walker and her beloved grandchildren, Ryan Holcomb and Hanna Holcomb.
Virginia was born in Selma, Alabama on August 10th, 1936. She attended the University of Alabama where she earned her BA in English. She moved to Baytown, Texas after graduation with her husband, Les Holcomb, and began a family that would eventually grow to include four children. Her endless patience and optimism helped her to navigate the bumps and bruises that a house full of boys provided. During this time, she taught Sunday school at Grace United Methodist Church and was involved with many other church events and activities while keeping up with the demands of a busy household.
In her early forties, with her sons growing more independent, Virginia entered the work force. She took a position with Lee College and enjoyed it so much that she never left. She retired from the financial aid department after twenty years with the college.
Retirement allowed Virginia the time to do what she loved best, both nurturing and spoiling her two grandchildren. She was a tireless Grandma to the kids and they remained central to her existence even after her capabilities became slowed by the inevitability of the aging process. She loved spending time with family and friends at her home in Fredericksburg and access to the house was available to all, whether she could be there or not.
Later in life, Virginia became a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church and attended for as long as her health would allow. She was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in the Preceptor Gamma Chapter and cherished the time spent with her sorority sisters. Virginia had a kind and gentle soul and it was impossible not to enjoy her company. As such, she leaves a long trail of friends behind as she enters her new journey. Her memory will live on, in the lives of the friends and family who have had the pleasure of knowing this wonderful woman. From those whose lives you have touched, we can only say ""Thank you, Virginia"", but the words can never match the emotion we feel in our hearts from the beautiful memories you have given us. Rest in peace, Mother. You are certainly deserving.
A memorial service for Virginia will be held at Navarre Funeral Home on Friday, October 9th, 2015 at 6:00 PM.
