

Wilyne was born in Goose Creek, Texas, on March 3, 1941, to Wilmer and Geneva Laughlin. After attending Alamo Elementary and Horace Mann Junior High School, she graduated from Robert E. Lee Senior High School in 1959. Wilyne enrolled in Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas, where she majored in English and minored in Education and French.
Upon graduation, she became an educator and taught for thirty-eight years, first as a French teacher in Port Arthur, Texas, before returning to Baytown, where she spent the remainder of her career as a seventh grade English teacher at Baytown Junior.
After retiring, she found her calling as an advocate for educators, serving as president of the Goose Creek Federation of Teachers. In addition, Wilyne served on the Goose Creek ISD School Board as well as the Community Advisory Panel (CAP).
In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, traveling, working on genealogy with her sister, and had a lifelong love of nature. In addition, she spent many years in the fraternity of the Order of the Eastern Star where she acted as Worthy Matron of both the North Shore and Cedar Bayou chapters. She was honored as the O.E.S. State Poet Laureate, as well.
Ms. Laughlin was preceded in death by her father, Wilmer N. Laughlin, mother, Geneva Kirk Laughlin, and sister, Jean Laughlin McLeod. She is survived by her niece, Rhonda McLeod, of Houston, nephew, Todd McLeod, of Houston, brother-in-law, Ronald McLeod, of Baytown, as well as many cousins and friends.
A visitation is scheduled at Navarre Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 2, 2018, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Services will be held on Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at 10 a.m. at Navarre Funeral Home with Rev. Eddie Norris officiating. Burial services to follow at Cedarcrest Cemetery.
Though she supported many charitable organizations, including educational, humanitarian, and environmental causes, Wilyne truly loved animals. Her home always included adopted dogs and cats, most recently her beloved Abigail.
