Aubrey grew up with his family in Beaumont. He met his wife of 70 years, Mary Helen, at a bus stop downtown. Together they raised two sons, Danny and Tim. He loved baseball, and was always at park with one of his boys, or coaching another team. He was a caring man who looked out for others. He helped to take care of two brothers, Podie and Wink Blaine, like his own sons when their father died. Danny and Tim both agree that Podie was the favorite who could do no wrong. Aubrey worked as a heavy equipment operator out of International Union of Operating Engineers Local #450. He was a longtime member of Dowlen Road Church of Christ.
Aubrey was an outgoing man who never met a stranger. He was known to stop by and visit with friends, bringing tea cakes and candies he made himself. He enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting and fishing. He was always out in Sabine Pass, and his friends called him the "Flounder King". And he enjoyed talking about hunting and fishing even more, as every conversation seemed to end with a tale of a hunt or fish from the past.
He is survived by his brother William Goss, sons Danny Mercer of Beaumont and Tim Mercer of Dallas, Charles (Podie) Blain, Richard (Wink) Blain who he considered sons as well, Grandchildren Danielle Culver, Drake Mercer, and Kristian Puckett.
He is preceded in death by his wife Mary Helen Mercer, his parents Lavard and Zula Mae, brother Herbie Mercer, Sister Jane Darby, and sister Lois Mae Koening.
