Barbara Ione Jones Watts, 88, of Baytown, passed away on Monday, February 26, 2018 at Harbor Hospice in Beaumont.

Barbara was born July 23, 1929 in Pine Grove, Louisiana to Benjamin and Pauline Jones. At age of 18, Barbara enrolled at Lamar University to attend nursing school. She became best friends with Rose Watts for many years. By being best friends, she was introduced to Rose’s brother, Edward Watts, whom she married on August 8, 1947. After being married, she had to make a career change from nursing to special education school teacher. She taught special education at Lucas Elementary School and at Roy Guess Elementary while in Beaumont. She also taught at Kirbyville Elementary School and later substituting in the Barber’s Hill School District after moving to Baytown. She taught school for a total of 35 years.

During the years they lived in Beaumont, she had four children: Barbara Ann, Joe, Carol, and Mark. Her husband retired and bought a 28 acre farm in Kirbyville where they lived for 20 years. When her husband’s health started declining, they moved to Baytown to be closer to their son Joe and his wife, so that they could help take care of them. She had devoted every minute of her life to him as he had Alzheimer’s. In 2012, her husband Edward passed away.

After he passed away, she found a Senior Citizen’s Group and devoted her time to fun activities. She enjoyed swimming, exercising, and making new friends. One new, dear friend in particular was Ella Cox. In Barbara’s declining years, Ella was at her home every day, visiting her friend and taking care of her. Barbara looked forward to those visits from Ella. The first thing out of Barbara’s mouth when you went to visit her was “Ella came to see me today.” Thanks Ella!

Barbara is preceded in death by her parents; Benjamin and Pauline Jones, her husband; Edward Watts, her brother: Cecil Jones, her sister; Maxon Watts.

Barbara is survived by her four children; Barbara Ann Buchanan and husband Jimmy of San Antonio, Joe Watts and wife Jeanette of Baytown, Carol Cooper and husband David of Burleson, and Mark Watts and wife Diane of Gilmer; ten grandchildren; Jeremy, Johnathan, and Eddie, Brad, Debbie, and Scott, Christy and Scott, Amanda and Chad; thirteen great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren.

Funeral service for Barbara Watts will be held on Friday, March 2, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Forest Lawn Funeral Home with her great-grandson Matt Fitzgerald officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
