Ruth was born on January 26, 1920, in Yuba, Oklahoma, where she lived with her parents, Everett and Urith Smith, and her sister, Dorothy Scott. After attending college in Oklahoma, Ruth began her professional life as a schoolteacher. During World War II, she moved to Beaumont, Texas, where she contributed to the war effort by working as a burner at Bethlehem Shipyard. She later served as a substitute teacher and worked in accounting at Service Painting Company. Ruth went on to establish Major Painting, Inc., where she proudly served as President. She concluded her career in accounting at Dixie Truck Center, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, resilience, and leadership.
While working at the shipyard during World War II, Ruth met the love of her life, Lucien Sidney McGuire Jr. They were married on March 8, 1946, and shared fifty-six wonderful years together until his passing on April 11, 2002. United by a strong and enduring faith, Ruth and Lucien became members of Calvary Baptist Church in 1946, where they remained devoted and active participants, contributing meaningfully to the church’s legacy and community.
Ruth lived a long and joyful life, serving as the heart and foundation of her family. Her unwavering character, strength, and resilience inspired all who knew her, setting a powerful example within her community. Deeply devoted to her faith, Ruth shared it generously and lived it fully. Together with Lucien, she gave selflessly—offering both time and resources to those in need. Ruth’s love was often felt through her cooking, which comforted generations and left behind a legacy of warmth and care in every meal she prepared.
