David Leroy Apgar

Known as “Dutch” to his friends and family, he retired from North Star Steel (Optimus Steel), where he was a millwright for over twenty years and forged many enduring friendships. Dutch, a proud US Army Vietnam Veteran, continued serving others in his community throughout his life, either as an advocate in local veterans groups, a union steward, a volunteer at the VA, or with his church in Vidor, delivering food.

Dutch was a true “gearhead” and had a lifelong passion for cars, motorcycles, and racing. He especially enjoyed building and refurbishing cars, several of which earned him trophies and awards. He was a devoted fan of the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) and loved anything and everything related to racing and automobiles. His passion for cars was more than a hobby; it was a part of who he was and something he loved sharing with others.

Dutch was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Myrtle Apgar; his wife, Linda Apgar; his stepdaughter, Megan LeBlanc; his brothers, James Apgar and Butch Apgar; his sisters, Julie Fisher and Carol Moore; his niece, Joy Kay Apgar; and his nephew, John Apgar.

He is survived by the mother of his children, Debra Whitaker, son, Christopher David Apgar; daughter, Jessica Apgar; stepchildren, Sean Allen Lang, Deanna Thibodaux and her husband Brad, and Marci Nilluka and her husband, Chad; grandchildren, Alexandra Apgar and Anna Apgar; sister, Christine Pierre; nieces, Amy Apgar-Miller, Dejeana Burke, Kim Wright, Shannon Bringhust, Tina Apgar, Angel Chatman, and Tara Apgar; nephews, John Fisher, James Moore, Jason Moore, and James Bartlett; sister-in-law, Kate Apgar; brother-in-laws, Albert Fisher and Tom Moore; and a host of other family members and dear friends who will cherish his memory.

Dutch will always be remembered for his service to his country, his willingness to help others, his love of family and friends, and his unmistakable passion for cars and racing. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories that will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Cremation services will be held under the direction of Forest Lawn Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Dutch’s name to a non-profit of your choice serving veterans or families in need.
