Dewey Robert Carlin Jr.

Robert was born on December 20, 1935, to Dewey R. Carlin, Sr. and Mayme Howell Carlin in Beaumont, Texas. He graduated from South Park High School in 1952 as salutatorian and went on to graduate from Lamar University in 1956 with a degree in Electrical Engineering and later earned his Masters in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. He began his career at Convair in Fort Worth, Texas, where he worked for two years before Lamar University invited him to return and join its faculty.

That invitation began a remarkable 44-year career as an electrical engineering professor. Robert had the privilege of teaching and mentoring thousands of aspiring engineers, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students and on the field he loved. His dedication to education and to his students was a defining part of his life and legacy.

On October 21, 1957, Robert married Billie Hayes Carlin, a member of the South Park High School class of 1956. Together, they shared 68 years of marriage, building a life centered around family, faith, adventure, and love.

Robert loved being outdoors and making memories with his family. He enjoyed camping, hiking, waterskiing, and snow skiing. He coached Little League baseball, led his sons’ Scout troop, and enjoyed taking his family to cheer on many of his favorite Houston Astros games.

After retiring from teaching, Robert and Billie moved to Friendswood, Texas, to be near their first grandchildren, where he fully embraced his role as Grandpa. As more grandchildren were born, Robert and Billie enjoyed frequent road trips to visit family in Arizona, Bastrop, and Amarillo. These visits and the time spent with his grandchildren became some of his most treasured memories.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, his twin brothers, and his son, David Kyle Carlin.

He is survived by his beautiful bride, Billie Hayes Carlin; three children, Steve Carlin (Pam) of Friendswood, Kimberly Cock (Bob) of Rockwall, and Kristi Moore of Friendswood; grandchildren Allison Dirks (David), Stephanie Brister (Clint), Brandon Carlin (Klaire), Kaley Cock, Isabelle Moore, and Presley Moore; three great-grandchildren, Nathaniel James Dirks, Kinsley Grace Dirks, and Arbor Jane Carlin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family extends a special thank you to the caregivers at Hope Residential Assisted Living and Essential Hospice for their loving care and compassion.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on August 22, 2026, at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 4955 Pine Street, Beaumont, Texas 77704. Family will welcome guests beginning at 12pm for visitation.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial contribution to an educational scholarship at the school of your choice, in honor of Robert’s lifelong commitment to education and his belief in the importance of helping future generations succeed.
