Michael “Mike” Krepper, age 68, passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 19 at 10:50 PM in his sister Suzanne’s home in Dallas. He was a victim of colon cancer. He never lost his spirit or sharp wit while he battled. The cancer never once broke his determination to fight. Michael was born March 23, 1951 in Beaumont, Texas to Muriel June and Gabriel Krepper, his loving parents. He graduated from Beaumont High School and Lamar University. He secured a position in Memphis, Tennessee at Christian Brothers High School. He became their band director and music teacher. His tenure there was from 1980 till 2000. After his stay there he entered the Memphis public school system and taught there until retirement in 2019. He spent his career mentoring and teaching the students about music and being the best they could be. His love of music extended beyond the school. He was a member of “The King Beez”, The Memphis Jazz Orchestra, The Men in Black, Natchez, and several other groups playing all over the United States. He was asked to play with such notables as Johnnie Mathis, Tony Bennett, Aretha Franklin, Otis Williams of The Temptations and more. He was a mentor to many and was deeply respected by all that knew him. Playing music was the greatest joy in his life. He will be missed by all that knew and played beside him. Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Muriel June and Gabe. He is survived by Suzanne, his sister, and Pat and Jimmie, his two brothers. A memorial service will be held in his honor in his home town of Beaumont at the Forest Lawn Funeral Home. There will be a viewing at 1:00 PM with a service to follow at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 29, 2020. A celebration of life will be held in Memphis the last week in March. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you make a donation to the colon cancer organization of your choice.

In 1968, when Mike first came to Memphis, three musicians joined up and started performing together as a horn section in various bands. Mike (who we lovingly called El Kreppo &/or Kreppie), Daryl Venable (who passed away in 2015) & myself. Mike (who had tremendous talent) eventually joined other bands & then moved back to Beaumont for a while. We always stayed in touch with each other, no matter what we had going on in our lives. Maybe 10 or so years ago, we once again ended up in bands together (MJO & Natchez) (for that matter, any band I was in, I wanted Mike in the band, also). In the past 10 years we talked on the phone almost every day… if one of us missed calling the other, whoever called, the receiver on the other end could expect a tongue lashing for failing to call. I still am in a state of shock, & find myself picking up my phone to call him.

I'm shocked and saddened at this news. Mike, to me. Was one of the most genuine, funny, talented and real guys I have ever had the pleasure of getting to know. My heart is in the dump now that he is no longer in this world. I miss now and will continue to miss everyday.

Mike, this is truly, one of the hardest memorials I have ever had to force myself to write. Your passing so suddenly has left us in shock. You were such a big part of our sister Jaynie's life for so many years, you were like family. Thank you for all of the love and support for her. It was like a love story, when you two met while working together at Christian Brothers. You two have shared your love of music, laughter, cajun cooking, cats, travel. Thank you for seeing her through some really tough times in her life. I've thought of you as a Brother in law. You were a dedicated, hard working, talented, life loving, wonderful human being. You will be missed. God Bless you always.

Mike and I became friends during the early years of the Memphis Jazz Orchestra. He was a fine musician and a good and loyal friend, always ready to help in any way he could. Even if it was just to make you laugh! He will be missed.

Mike and I became friends when I joined the Memphis Jazz Orchestra. I knew him before this while teaching elementary music in the Memphis school system. Mike taught me many things, but he taught me to laugh and enjoy making music and to enjoy life mostly!! What a GREAT musician! When he played a solo, he was all over that tenor sax!!! We are missing him sooooooo much! He was ALWAYS joking around and made me laugh so many times! I will NEVER forget him and I thank God that I was fortunate enough to be his friend!
Miss you, Gary Goldsmith
